REDCAM endorses what Pope Francis has said about civil unions for homosexuals.
REDCAM - Official Statement
October 21, 2020
With renewed enthusiasm and growing hope, the Mexico Network of Rainbow Catholics (REDCAM) joins the many messages of support for the words by Pope Francis relating to the convenience of civil unions between homosexuals, heard in the documentary Franceso by Evgeny Afineevsky.
As a national association that brings together LGBTIQ+ Catholic groups in Mexico - which has engaged in dialogue with bishops and officials of the Catholic Church - we are happy to hear the Holy Father say that homosexuals are children of God and "have the right to be part of a family" via "civil union legislation."
Every time we hear an LGBTIQ+ Catholic remind us of the immense value that social and governmental institutions place on what the Church says - and the immeasurable change that its words can bring - we confirm the high relevance pertinent to the Pope speaking in favor of human rights of LGBTIQ+ persons. We have no doubt that the Pope's brief comments on this matter, unveiled today around the world, will bring overwhelming and palpable benefits to LGBTIQ+ people, Catholic or not.
Aware that the ecclesial institution still has a long way to go to fully welcome its LGBTIQ+ members, we underscore what Pope Francis stated as steps on the path of Christian love, as laudable evidence of a genuine desire to change that Church that LGBTIQ+ Catholics love so much. We insist, however, that much remains to be done.
Responding to the call made by Pope Francis himself on the day of his election - "pray for me" - we raise our invocation to God on his behalf. We thus trust that this transformation of thought, spirit and faith - in and from the Church - will continue undeterred.
